Shelter from the storm of Domestic Violence House of Imagene Logo

The house that Imagene built.

Odds are, if you’ve lived near DC for any amount of time you’ve heard of the Bishop Imagene B. Stewart. She is the head of DC’s African-American Women’s Clergy Association and the pastor of The Greater Pearly Gates Baptist Church. In 1992, she was honored with the prestigious “Living
the Dream” award for her service to battered women, the homeless, and the nation’s veterans. She even has her own radio talk show, “The Georgia Peach,” every Sunday morning from 8-10 a.m., WOL 1450.

The House of Imagene is just one of her many ministries. The first seed was planted nearly four decades ago, when the terrible toll of domestic violence began to press on her heart. Imagene Stewart responded the way she always does when people are in need: she rolled up her sleeves and got to work.

In 1972, her vision for a 12-bed safe haven became a reality, and was named, fittingly, The House of Imagene. Today, this labor
of love is a compassionate and reliable presence on the front lines of domestic violence, providing shelter from the storm to victims throughout the DC-area and beyond.
